The Story of Heritage House

Heritage House was first born in 2004 in the heart of Bedstuy, Brooklyn, when the Akowe-Halsey family opened the first floor of their brownstone to the community. It became a safe and sacred space a place for spiritual festivals, ancestral celebrations, and cultural gatherings rooted in African traditional practice. By day, it served

as a summer camp for youth, offering an African scientific approach to learning, where children could grow in cultural understanding, confidence and connection to self and heritage.

As the family eventually moved from the home, the physical space was no longer available, but the spirit of Heritage House lived on. In 2024, Heritage House was reborn, not tied to a single place, but rising as a spiritual initiative grounded in a clear calling. To create ways for people in the diaspora to access and preserve African spiritual traditions, while also learning about themselves, their lineages, and ancestral paths.

For years, much of the work has focused on training and developing priests for the diaspora not just in ritual, but in deep responsibility and community care. Heritage House draws inspiration from the old ways, when priests cared for the community, and the community cared for the priests.

We are building a spiritual ecosystem one that includes singers, drummers, chefs, linguists, herbalists, birth workers, business people, elders, youth, politicians, and more. Every role matters. Every gift is sacred.

It is essential that we pour the ancestral ways of being back into our communities not just through ceremony, but through everyday life, how we speak, how we heal, how we raise our children and how we care for one another.

Heritage House is not just a space it’s a living practice, a community of people committed to living sacredly, rooted in memory and moving forward in power.

We are the house.

We are the heritage.
